Why should Kindle be singled out from among all their products for concern?

I'm sure, just from a need to manage inventory, that they *could* tell the exact number of any item: sold, damaged, returned, in stock, shipped within the US, shipped to Cambodia, purchased with free shipping, purchased with a coupon code, purchased after a redirect from a Google ad link, etc...
But why are people concerned that we don't know how many Kindles it's sold?
How is that relevant to anything other than consumer curiosity?
