There's a running joke in the SEC that if you don't win the press conference, you're already sunk.

This guy...I mean, there isn't historical precedent for this. The SEC is where NFL coaches go for employment. A 5-19 coach at Iowa State? Who in the Auburn administration signed off on that? The 4-6 people who would have say in that all just turned in their resignations, whether they realize it or not. All this move did was make all the fans who had turned on Tuberville start saying, "You know, he was a pretty good coach..."
