That is what I did, but some people said it was too expensive, could we order a la carte, etc

The secretary, who was supposed to be helping me, came to me with the problem and I said "The restaurant will be able to accommodate a couple of separate bills, if we tell them when we arrive".
This wasn't good enough for her, so she went to the boss who unhelpfully said "canvas everyone and see what they say". She did and probably about half said if they had the option they would order a la carte.
I solved the problem by telling the secretary that everyone could order a la carte if that's what she wanted, but the restaurant would not take separate bills, so she would have to take account of everything people ordered and figure out how much everyone owed. She immediately sent out an email to everyone saying "set menu" was the only option.
