I can see it frm the contractor's side, he bid on a job, opens it up and finds extensive hidden damage, goes ahead and takes care of it because lets..

face it, it had to be done anyway and it would mean stoping, not finishing, to call and wait for approval for the additional work, it would likely cost twice as much for the extra day.
you never know, I hate feeling hustled. we had lowe's put in a screen door, installation was 150, they guy tells us that he needs to charge an extra 35 to bring out a circle saw to cut a shim, a flimsy stick that a kid could snap with their hands and this was hidden under the framework so ragged edges.
