I'm sorry for your friend, it's such a sad thing to lose your animal companions.

And I too can't believe the complications. But I'm vehemently opposed to declawing cats. It's not that difficult to keep them from clawing furniture, etc. It's akin to chopping off a human's fingers and toes below the first knuckle and I feel it's inhumane.
A declawing discussing turned into one of the worst and ugliest TT battles several years ago, it got nasty.
