Cotton tends to soak it up, gets very havy and takes forever to dry.

For sailing (in the Puget sound in general because it's so cold) you're better off wearing really good microfleece, like from Pantagonia or North Face--it's made out of recycled 2 liter soda bottles, by the way. If you want something waterproof, look for a Tyvek parka with a microfleece lining.
