They did not have to nor should they have built this prequel by including the Adamas as core characters. I get they were trying to tie it to BSG but it really wasn't necessary. Graystone and anyone else who was Tauron besides William Adama's father would have worked just as well. In fact, I think having young William Adama in there detracted from the story being told.
