So, I was told today that I am not allowed to take a cab home from a surgery center post-op, for "legal reasons". What on earth could the problem be?

Am I missing something? If I choose to take a cab home, what's the big deal?

It's all about litigation. if you started bleeding or passed out, the cab driver could just leave you by the side of the road. You, or your family,
