I wish that Katniss got some relief from her torment and nightmares, because that is what I would want to happen to a great character from a wonderful book, but I also love that she didn't, because there is no way in reality that she would ever recover from these three books. And the only thing more stunning to me than Finnick and Prim was the way they went out. Finnick? Yeah, we'll just leave him in a hole full o' mutts. Peace, one of our most interesting characters. Prim, the only character in the book with real hope and a future and some joy? Lets carpet bomb her.
And that's what it would have been IRL too. War doesn't leave all the main characters alone. I love that Katniss shot Coin, but I also love that she wasn't anointed a hero for it either (even if she maybe should have been). She was right that she was a pawn of a bigger movement, and she got disposed of exactly like a pawn at the end, albeit peacefully.
