ok. well it's been big for 10-15 years (probably started earlier). Think O Brother Where Art Thou, and throw in some hippies.

there is a lot of great music in that area.
No Depression is a magazine about roots music, and they have a running joke about how no one knows what to call it. Americana? Alt-country? Roots? Bluegrass? They have a great magazine and a very active facebook page, where they post tons of new music all the time. it's a good place to get to know roots music. Basically, I'd describe it as American acoustic music. Could be country, blues, folk, cajun, rock, almost anything.
