Maybe I shouldn't be surprised, but I was certain they were going kill bread boy at the end.

I'm sure they do later on, probably in Book 2, though I don't want to know, I'll find out when I get there. But I'm shocked he survived Book 1, even if it does allow a Twilight-esque love triangle.
