singapore has some fantastic models for public/private mixed investment that unfortunately would never fly here....

they do a fair bit of government spending that supports basic research in tech and biotech but the companies are generally public and free market. it's an interesting model.

it's also a pretty unique place, though. the location of the port (which is now the largest in the world in terms of goods that pass through it) at the intersection of key trade routes has always been a strategic advantage.
