I'm sure people - friends, family, etc. are all going to want to do something to help - and maybe you could suggest they see if they have any photos that they could share that might help replace some of what your family has lost?

Getting them put together into something you could give your mom later might be very comforting - even letters that she may have written YEARS ago to people that they may have kept - cards - whatever - anything tangible that has history.

Obviously I don't know your mom and family, but hope this idea might help in some way.
