my thoughts are, if you're on a bike, you're operating a machine that is propelling you at a velocity beyond your body's own abilities

and thus creating the portential for impact forces greater than the human body is designed to absorb. So it's not unreasonable to engage safety devices to protect critical parts of the anatomy (your kid's head) against those forces.
