It's more of a character development show.

for example, Pierce (Chevy Chase) has changed over the course of the show, but it's been a gradual progression.
I imagine if I saw the D&D one as a stand alone, I'd think Pierce's character was just dumb and unbelievable.
You need to watch the last half of season one.
