like "boyfriend" sometimes just doesn't cover it. my mom and my stepfather have been together 20+ years, but aren't married

so were I to call him "my mom's boyfriend," it wouldn't seem serious enough. I go with stepfather, even though it may not technically correct. my stepfather goes with "partner" for my mom. my mom chooses to avoid the subject altogether.
