The differences in the ability to rally the extreme right and the extreme left is basically born out of the demographics that make up those groups,IMO

On average, the extreme right is less educated, more religious and as a result of the combination, IMO, is easier to scare and whip into a frenzy with manipulated truths. The establishment right (mostly rich, white guys) is happy to use that to their benefit and pays hefty lip service to the ideals, while doing whatever they want (generally) because the frenzied right isn't really digging to find or understand the truth.
The left tends, demographically, to be more educated and less religious. It tends as an establishment to get more focused on the grey of the issues than pure black and white and can get very caught up in the nuances. So they're less swayed by the extreme left because the extremes are just too simplistic. They are also often pretty fractured in terms of the extremes that are supported, again, because as a demographic they are less apt to blindly follow.
