This. There was no winning response available. Support Hosni full-throatedly and you lose the Egyptian street. Throw him under the bus and he retains

power, you've lost a critical ally in the region.
The only public statements had to sound exactly like they are: trying to thread a needle by not offending anyone too much.
We have next to no leverage to force Hosni out. We can't publicly support the street without it costing the street some credibility.
