I think the the social media aspect of it is exaggerated.

FB, etc allowed them to coordinate but they would have done so anyway I think. It was simply the means they used to organize but people have done this before without FB. And given that the government brought down the Internet for awhile I don't think anyone can claim that social media was more effective than traditional means.
I do think the next revolution will use social media much more effectively. I'm guessing there will be some redundancies or possible work arounds to maintain connectivity. Perhaps this was a dress rehearsal then.
