It's effect is exaggerated internally, but given the era, external monitoring and communication shines more sunlight on the situation than say

50 years ago a country could meddle out in the open with fewer people knowing about it directly, and then make a big announcement and have it taken as truth. That's much harder to do with people outside finding different media sources and sharing them instantly with friends online.
I'm not discounting radio, wire or newspaper service back then, just that it's even more instantaneous and omniscient today.
