we're not witnessing "history in the making"

Too much time has passed since it began, the stories that will shape our cultural understanding of the events are already in place and are already being told. So, in a sense history has already been made, it's just now being reported, as the possibilities presented at the beginning have been narrowed down to the inevitable conclusion.
