I think everyone should always aspire to be a good person who does nice things for people who need them.

This is especially true if a person has previously demonstrated similar behavior toward you.
Having said that, she is specifically asking you to stand in a gray area if she wants you involved with her two boys. Either your best or worst case scenario in that instance (I'm honestly not sure which) would be your becoming the inverse of that Hax Chat letter we've been debating for two weeks. You'd be the new guy in that very scenario if it ever got to that point.
For right now, the last thing a person coming out of a marriage needs is romance yet realistically speaking, that's the first thing most people do. So, you need to define terms there and let her know that probably shouldn't be on the menu for either of you, at least not in the short term.
Other than that, she needs you a person in her life to stand up and be a champion and that is something you have the make-up to be.
