After I did that I got another batch of followers. Probably friends of fans that saw it on their wall. That's all I did really. One message every 2 or 3 weeks isn't really spamming. I would stay away from several a week or they will hide you.
As long as it's interesting they will post comments and enjoy it. Read the messages I did over the last year.
