ST computer / laptop Geek Question time ... concerning the word processing software ...

i'm thinking seriously about buying a cheap laptop or netbook, and I just need a basic word processing program ... doesn't have to be Microsoft Office 2007 or anything like that ...

my mom got a desktop computer about 2 years ago, and it has a basic 'microsoft works word processor' program, but also has the M.. Office programming if she ever decided to pay the fees etc. to use that ... i've used the microsoft works thingy on her computer and it serves my needs... again, just a basic word processing deal to write school term papers, the yearly NANOWRIMO stuff, or whatever i might need a word processor program to write something with ...

so here's the ? ... is a 'works word processor program' pretty standard fair on computers? like, it's the basic level thing, and if you want, you can buy into the M Office stuff for all the frills and stuff that it offers ?
