I think they were trying to strong-arm UFC, thinking they would cave due to fan pressure for a Fedor/Lesner fight. At the time it was probably the fight fans wanted most. Now, I don't think people really care. And his offer from UFC will be way down from te previous offer.
He could have also been afraid to fight the top UFC guys. Or he was too controlled by Russian mob guys to be able to do the deal.
