Just thinking about it a little more, the one bit of heart is (spoilers for Inception and most Nolan movies))

the backstory between diCaprio and Cotillard, and his decision to trick her so she would agree to return to the real world. Everything in the movie flows from that.

Nolan seems to specialise in movies where the protagonist makes a single decision, then explore its lead-up and itys consequences. And usually, the audience doesn't know what that decision is until the end of the movie.

Memento - Guy Pearce decides to lie in his notes, knowing he'll forget and them accept them as truth.

The Prestige - the Bale twins decide to do whatever it takes to maintain the illusion that there's only one.

TDK - Batman chooses to save Maggie Gyllenhaal, but his decision is anticipated by the Joker - and Harvey becomes Two-Face.
