what irks me is this tech-optimist idea that tech change is somehow a linear process that means when the new thing comes along it will immediately...

replace the old. in fact, if the history of tech change shows anything it's that technological change tends to take a punctuated form that operates in fits and starts and is affected by all sorts of cultural and economic factors that can sometimes mean that the so-called obsolete remains in place for a heck of a long time.
