I would stay home and be there during the time you can be of the most help.

If you could do both, I would say to do both, but during the surgery there's nothing to do but sit there. Obviously it would help your mom for you to be there but that's going to be just sitting there waiting. Maximize being there the time when you can be of the most help caring for your dad to give your mom a break.
