Let me answer from the perspective of the patient.

I was in the hospital for 8 days a while back. I only remember the last one. There was never a time while I was there that I was alone. The members of my family had a rotation set up to guarantee I was cared for. I feel guilty about the fact that they spent so much of their days watching me sleep. I am asking Kim to answer honestly about whether their presence the first couple of days was of any tangible benefit (other than being wonderfully giving of each of them).

      - ICU: Typically 1 to 1 patient to nurse ratio. Some of the good nurses don't leave the bed. ICUs also have strict visitation so you may want to ask - James Bond (aka Igor) Feb 16, 19:08
