If he's going to be moved off ICU and need to spend a few more days inpatient on a normal floor before discharge, you go back that weekend and take Friday off so you can help when the nurses are less attentive and your family is more burned out. That way you can also help transitioning back home and getting everyone settled, doing grocery runs, etc. If you think two days isn't overkill, take Thursday or the following Monday as well.

Suggest that to your mom, see how it flies.
