the flip side is that in Clooney's case it has probably cost him a lot of money to follow his passion rather than what his agent would probably prefer

him to take. after Oceans 11, he could have probably done a lot of the paycheck movies that ultimately went to Russell Crowe or Colin Farrell or Depp or DiCaprio. but he's fairly pulled back from those to work with the Coen Bros and Soderbergh in smaller stuff that is satisfying to him.
