Granny Smith?
Gala?
Red Delicious?
I feel like it's supposed to be Granny Smith, but I'm open to other suggestion.

we like Spartan apples, but we usually make an apple cranberry pie so obviously the cranberries overpower the apple taste

I'll use whatever I feel like at that moment - and I don't think I've ever had/made an apple pie that wasn't good, so I don't know how much difference

IIRC, my Joy of Cooking says Granny Smith, with a maybe on Pippin. There's a couple others... -- nm

i don't know/any. (note: due to allergies, I can only eat apples when cooked/baked, as in a pie.)

red delicious should be fertilized with Agent Orange. For pie, I like a mix of apples. I don't like all-Granny pies. -- nm
