I went to the art museum today and found a painting I really like by an artist no one knows anything about.

Apparently, this painting and another (that I didn't see) by the same artist came to the museum in the 30's from a house in what is now a slum, but was once a thriving German community just north of downtown Cincy. The museum hasn't been able to find any history of the paintings or the artist.
The other painting is by Frank Duveneck. I'd never heard of him before moving here. He was born in Covington, studied painting in Germany and Italy, worked with several American impressionists. He's very well-known here and has a room at the museum dedicated to his work. The first time I saw the Harem Guard I liked it right away. Oddly, this painting isn't in the room with the other Duvenecks. It's in a room of "Orientalists". It reminds me of some of Sargent's work.
