From B2 and B3, re the death montage - My take on the non-clapping is that it has to do with the switch to a "live" backing performance.

When the song was just your standard arrangement, the audience didn't feel rude clapping while a performer was in the middle of their presentation. Once they went with a singer (was last year the first with Elton John?), that was it for the clapping.
Which I have to say is a bad choice. I get that some people find the "competition" in poor taste, but I always loved listening to see who really struck a cord with the audience. Plus, when it was a montage, every once in awhile, they would loop in dialouge from one performers scene or another. I liked that. Found this year's version very sterile. Wasn't much feeling for it.
