ok. I just typed this email for a friend so I'm pasting it here.

mom: So are people in Algeria black?
Me: No, they are Arab and Berber.
Mom: Who are the Berbers? The what? what are they called, what did you say? they're called what? (go through this about 5 times because she refuses to get a hearing aid)
Me: They are an ancient people, and they are white.
Mom: Oh, so they're elite.
Me: No.
Mom: I thought you said they were white.
Me: They are.
Mom: So they're higher up.
Me: Oh my God.
Mom: So the Berbers are Christian.
Me: WHY WOULD THEY BE CHRISTIAN???
Mom: I thought you said they were white.
Next, I explained that Berbers were there before the Arabs, who were there before the French, No the French do not still own the place, they've been gone for 40 years. Then Mom asked why they didn't like the French. I explained the thing about colonization and the French killing what, a million? two million? and Mom said, But what's their issue? I think my eyeballs exploded.
that's when my sister in law intervened.
Then my dad, who is quite knowledgeable about world politics, immediately picked a fight on a completely different topic related to Algeria, and the sudden switch in argument fidelity gave me whiplash.
