I think the reason that the spoilers thing can sometimes bother folks is that it involves cultural touchstones. I grew up in the 80s. Being asked to

spoiler warn for movies that are *the* highpoints of entertainment from my youth is basically asking me to scrub my conversation of culturally significant shorthand.

I get that not everyone has seen the same films I have and I certainly wouldn't purposefully spoil someone if it was clear they wanted a pristine viewing experience.

But to say that references to BTTF or Ghostbusters or the John Hughes films should get put behind a spoiler warning simply because the newer generation hasn't seen them yet is giving deference to people who didn't grow up with it over those of us who did.
