When Gibbs got deployed to Desert Storm (the first Iraq war) his wife witnessed a sailer getting killed by a Mexican drug lord. She was going to testify so NCIS put a protective detail on her and her daughter. The drug lord put a hit on them. They were being driven somewhere by their NCIS bodyguard and the druglord's assassin shot the driver through the head. That resulted in the van crashing and both of them were killed. Gibbs found out while he was stuck in Iraq. By the time he got back they'd been buried and he left the service. Then he proceeded to hunt the druglord down like a dog (in Mexico). When he found the dude, he took him out with one bullet--from like a quarter of a mile away with his sniper rifle. It was so sad, it actually made me cry.
