i mean that they show real parts of their lives - work, school, etc.; but not always in naturally playing-out ways.

there is reality to some degree, as they're not totally following scripts and they do get to choose their life paths and make their own decisions about most things, at least.
i think other things start organically, but then get smushed to fit into the show. example: as jb said, maybe 2 people would have talked with eachother on the phone if they were not on the show; but instead it's played out at a restaurant or the like.
i saw some interview where one of them said they refilmed her greeting someone somewhere because they didn't get the shot the first time - things like that.
there's artificial in the editing as well, as with not showing the side projects different people have undertaken, only showing snippets of things, etc.
